  • Scripture Deuteronomy 6:6-13a
  • Date Sunday, 21 June 2015

We are into the Summer Song Series. Each week will feature a favorite hymn or song. Feel free to pass on your favorite to Pastor Rick.

This week features, "A Christian Home." The words compose a pray appropriate for daily use as Believers pray for a strengthening of the family unit in the United States. The family has taken quit a beating with many people believing the government should take over (sound a little like Communism?). These folks see the family as ineffective and basically, a failure.

I suggest that it isn't the family that has failed ... it is the parents who have passed their responsibilities off to others and no longer believe in spiritual realities any longer. Should parents research Deuteronomy 6 and portions of Proverbs (for a start), perhaps parents would regain that strength and guidance now lost through such failed philosophies as Dr. Spock and others.

God created the family and He knows how it works best.
I suggest parents (especially fathers) return to that Book to learn how to build a strong, successful family.

  • Scripture John 20:23
  • Date Sunday, 03 May 2015

On this Sunday, we are continuing in John 20 & focusing on a question that came out of the post-Worship Discussion Group.

What did Jesus mean when he spoke those words recorded in 20:23? Were the disciples given God-like powers to now absolve sins for people? Did people no longer have to confess to God, rather they could confess to a disciple? Later, the Church adapted this through aplostalic succession and empowered the priest to absolve sins, so in fact people would go to confessional rather than confessing to God. It is a logical sequence, but one might see certain errors as well.

It is helpful, in understanding scripture, to explore the original language and cut out the translational assumptions. This is a good example. Simply, Jesus has said that these people, with & through the power of the Holy Spirit, would be responsible to forgive other people ... and the reality of benefit is a releasing -- which spells freedom -- or a "retaining" which will continue to affect one's life. Could this be a call for a releasing of those barriers that stand in relationships? Could this be, rather than a supernatural power, a power that is available to us today? Is forgiveness easy? We all know the answer to that! But, Followers of Jesus have a special power & ability to forgive that comes from & through the Holy Spirit. So, how about we use it?

Jesus said to him, "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

John 14:6
